Cobb Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard 2014

    • Tasting Notes

Winemaker's notes: First impression is of cherry and red, fuji apple. Once you have arrived, you’ll find more savory hints of shiitake mushroom, Asian five spice, and forest floor.. This is one of those lovely Pinot Noirs that you can experience through its aromas. On the palate, fine, delicate tannins meld with a crisp cranberry and grapefruit tartness, and subtle elements of lavender, pine, and truffle.

    • The Vineyard

I have been working with this exceptional vineyard since 2003, and have made a single-vineyard wine from its coveted fruit since 2006. We guide all of the farming at Rice-Spivak, and have first pick of the grapes we want to work with. People are often surprised to learn that this is our most inland vineyard. Even so, at just six miles from the ocean it is still very much influenced by the marine climate. Made from a combination of Swan and Dijon Noir plantings grown in unique volcanic soils, this is always one of our most profoundly aromatic wines, making it delightful before the first sip is even taken.

    • Accolades

      “Year’s Best US Pinot Noir”
      Wine & Spirits Magazine

“Like the Emmaline Ann recommended here, this comes from a vineyard planted on Goldridge soil near Sebastopol; this site has a bit more volcanic material and a cool northern exposure. While many coastal pinots from northern California have a foresty aspect to them, this wine seems particularly leafy and delicate, with a cool fruit character that feels as refreshing as iced tea – you can almost imagine beads of condensation on the glass. It’s a touch lean right now, needing some age or an hour in a decanter to allow its bright red fruit tones to emerge and throw a layer of silky finesse over its savory spine.”
      Wine & Spirits Magazine

"Ross Cobb's 2014 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is rich, deeply layered and inviting. Exotic spice and red-toned fruit make a strong first impression. The inclusion of 60% whole clusters adds lovely aromatic presence throughout. If opened young, the 2014 needs a bit of air. Like many of these Pinots, the Rice-Spivak has a top layer of reduction that needs to dissipate for the wine to be at its most expressive."
      Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

“Cobb’s 2014 Rice-Spivak Vineyard Pinot Noir (13.3 percent) is more floral and opulent compared to their Emmaline Ann bottling at this stage, but still impeccably balanced. Again, the flavors dance across the palate, leaving you wondering how such intensity can be so light. It’s another dazzling Pinot Noir, reflecting the locale of the vineyard and the talent of the winemaker. The polished tannins simply add to the wine’s elegance.”
      Apstein on Wine

"Light to medium garnet in color, this wine smells of juicy, bright raspberry fruit with a hint of sweet oak on top. In the mouth, bright raspberry and redcurrant flavors have a hint of brown sugar and oak notes to them. Juicy bright acidity keeps the fruit fresh and vibrant in the mouth. Aromatically sweet finish."
      Alder Yarrow, Vinography

"Highly aromatic, with soaring aromas of black cherry, wilted rose, burnt tobacco, smoked game and earth. Deeply flavored with spiced cherry and cranberry fruit flavors, this mid weight wine has inviting lift, gentle tannins, and some finishing purpose."
      Rusty Gaffney, Prince of Pinot
