      Ross Cobb's tasting notes: This vineyard always yields more red fruit and cherry-cola and spice notes, reminding me of the more overt Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs. But the rugged coastal pine and fir forests impact the bright fruit with lovely coniferous aromas and a richness typical of this west Sonoma Coast vineyard site.

      "Surprisingly, the 2015 is more approachable right away than the 2014. Really incredible mix of pine/forest floor and spruce tip aromas and flavors that I didn’t see on the other wines, mixed with underripe cherry. Really soft texture and silky tannin. While I think this will age very well, it’s almost hard to not want to drink this right away because it’s so damn good now. Give it a few years to develop some more umami notes to go along with the herbal tinge and pine resin and this will be absolutely incredible."

    • The Vineyard

      Planted in 1998, Jack Hill is the steepest site we work with, and one of the coldest. Surrounded by dense oak and fir forests, it is planted to three clones of Pinot Noir on a west-facing slope. Year after year, it delivers one of our most giving and graceful Pinot Noirs, with lovely aromatics and abundant layers of bright berry fruit. In 2015, the combination of wonderfully mature vines and a very small crop resulted in a wildly expressive Jack Hill Pinot Noir.

      "Ross Cobb's 2015 Pinot Noir Jack Hill is deep and powerful. That's the good news. The bad news is that the 2015 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, as the firm tannins need time to soften. This is an especially powerful, tightly wound Pinot for the year. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, dried flowers and licorice overtones open up, but only with great reluctance. The interplay of fruit richness and structure makes for a compelling wine, but readers need to be patient. The wait will be worth it, as this is a stunning wine by any measure."
