  • Cobb Pinot Noir Jack Hill Vineyard 2014 -- 750ml

Cobb Pinot Noir Jack Hill Vineyard 2014

    • Tasting Notes

Ross Cobb's tasting notes: This vineyard always yields more red fruit and cherry-cola and spice notes, reminding me of the more overt Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs. But the rugged coastal pine and fir forests impact the bright fruit with lovely coniferous aromas and a richness typical of this west Sonoma Coast vineyard site.

"Definitely in a reductive state on the nose. This is a wine to lay down and allow to develop its full potential. The nose is dominated by hay, red terra cotta, and dried strawberries, with an underlying struck matchstruck and flinty minerality to it that speaks to a freshness and youthful quality that demands just a bit more time in the bottle. While none of these wines are particularly oaky, this one shows just a hint of the vanilla and brown sugar on the finish. The wine is drinking well now, but I would hang on to this one for a few years to see its real potential."

    • The Vineyard

Planted in 1998, Jack Hill is the steepest site we work with, and one of the coldest. Surrounded by dense oak and fir forests, it is planted to three clones of Pinot Noir on a west-facing slope. Year after year, it delivers one of our most giving and graceful Pinot Noirs, with lovely aromatics and abundant layers of bright berry fruit. In 2014, the combination of a great growing season and wonderfully mature vines resulted in the most expressive Jack Hill Pinot Noir we have ever made. If you enjoyed this wine in the past, the 2014 vintage is a must. If you haven't tried it before, this is a great vintage to start.

    • Accolades

"The highlight in this set of wines, Cobb's 2014 Pinot Noir Jack Hill is vivid, nuanced and finely sketched, with all the elements in the right place. Nothing in particular stands out, instead, it is the wine's balance that speaks with great eloquence. Lifted, precise and focused, the 2014 offers striking interplay of fruit, acid and structure. The reductive character that is often present in these wines is nowhere to be found in the Jack Hill. In my view, that is a good thing. This is a gorgeous wine from Ross Cobb. The 2014 was done with 40% whole clusters."
