  • Cobb Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard 2014 -- 750ml

Cobb Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard 2014

    • Tasting Notes

Winemaker's notes: Rich raspberry and cherry fruit aromas, with subtle spicy bay laurel and white pepper notes. Takes 2-3 hours to open up, yielding sappy notes and rich, broad tannins, reflective of these 28-year-old vines. Highly recommended for your long-term cellar program.

    • The Vineyard

My family takes great pride in the fact that Coastlands was one of the first Pinot Noir vineyards on the far Sonoma Coast. More than just being one of the pioneering vineyards, under the care of my late mother, Diane, a special section of Coastlands was also used as a nursery to explore how different clones of Pinot Noir fared in the extreme conditions of the coast. Featuring vines planted in 1989 and 1996, our Diane Cobb block includes more than 20 clones of Pinot. Made from 18 of these clones, our 2014 Diane Cobb Pinot Noir is the most complex wine we make, mingling dazzling layers of fruit and spice, as well as fascinating savory elements. This is a particularly stunning vintage of Diane Cobb, and my personal favorite since the 2007 growing season. Dry farmed and sustainable for 20 years.

    • Accolades

“The 2014 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard is precise and nuanced, with striking aromatic complexity to play off the dark red cherry fruit. The 50% whole clusters are not especially evident. Medium in body, gracious and lifted, the 2014 has a lot to offer. Cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and dried cherry notes are laced together in this attractive, mid-weight Pinot, with clean, saline notes that support the long, super-expressive finish.”

“This is a super-beautiful, Burgundian expression of pinot noir, and was one of our favorite wines,’ says Mason. It comes from a block of 18 different clones that winemaker Ross Cobb’s mother planted in 1989. It’s a cool site, on the first ridge in from the Pacific.”

Not unlike the radiant 2013, this is open for business right away, but is a touch more angular and floral throughout. Sage, root beer, and bark aromas lead to a palate of bing cherries, salted caramel and black tea. Give this a couple more years to settle into its high-toned structure. Between the three single-block Coastlands bottlings, I find the Diane Cobb one to be the most aromatically complex and well rounded. 310 cases produced. 22 months in French oak, 35% new.
