Cobb Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard 1906 Block Mount Eden 2014

    • Tasting Notes

Winemaker's notes: The darker blackberry fruit is combined with a slight bay laurel essence. The tannins on the finish are more firm reflective of the tiny Pinot berries from this Mount Eden Clone. The clusters fit in the palm of your hand with each berry the size of a large bb. Also, one for the long-term cellar program.

    • The Vineyard

In 1998, my parents planted two of their favorite Pinot Noir clones -- Pommard and Mt. Eden -- on a special 4-acre block of Coastlands. They called it the 1906 Block because the original rancher who worked the land carved the date 1906 into an old oak tree overlooking the block at the time of the great San Francisco earthquake. In 2014, we made two wines from these coveted vines: a Pommard Clone Pinot, which we released last fall, and a Mount Eden Clone Pinot Noir. While the Pommard Clone Pinot was a brighter, more red fruit driven wine, we love the Mount Eden Clone for its alluring depth, deep color, full tannins and luscious dark berry flavors.

    • Accolades

“The 2014 Pinot Noir 1906 Mt. Eden is powerful and intense, with striking intensity in all of its dimensions. Succulent red cherry, cedar, tobacco and dried flowers. A hint of reduction dissipates quickly with air. The 2014 remains firm and in need of either cellaring or a good bit of air to soften further, but it is developing very positively. The 2014 was done with 50% whole clusters and spent 22 months in French oak.”

This wine is a pleasure to check in on, and causes you to appreciate Ross Cobb’s policy of holding wines in the bottle until he feels they are ready for the market. Only 200 cases were produced, aged for 22 months in French oak, 35% new. It has a more singular, reductive nose at this early stage of development, followed by cinnamon, nutmeg and blackberry on the palate, with a brooding finish.
