    • Tasting Notes

      Winemaker's notes: Very dark ruby color. Exceptionally aromatic and with flavors of dark and red fruits including raspberry and concentrated plum; white pepper, vanilla, minerals, and flint. A long, crisp finish.

    • The Vineyard

      When Coastlands was first being planted in 1989, very few varieties of pinot noir were available commercially, and fewer still tried under conditions on the edge of the continent. Working with the University of California at Davis, Diane Cobb established a University licensed nursery block at Coastlands that contained over 20 relatively unknown pinot noir varieties. In 1996 Diane doubled the nursery block with a single pinot noir variety she thought was both especially flavorful and well-suited for our coastal climate. The "Diane Cobb" designate pinot noir commemorates her life at Coastlands, the love of her family, and her 1.5 acres of vines that now yield such a lovely, complex, and thoroughly unique wine.

      (As much as I covet DRC, California Pinot Noir deserves equal time, and the one that wowed me the most in 2009 was the 2006 Cobb Wines Coastlands Vineyard: Diane Cobb from the chilly, ‘true’ Sonoma Coast. It’s gorgeous, with floral, black pepper and savory underbrush aromas and perfectly ripe fruit flavors. There is an ethereal quality to the wine – supple and palate-caressing, yet mouthwateringly refreshing, too, and with just 13.5 percent alcohol. The Diane Cobb Block Pinot isn’t cheap at $72, and is produced in small quantities -- which is exactly why it’s on my Christmas list.)”

      “Shifts in Sonoma”
      “As the 2009 harvest unfolds, I’ve been thinking about how much the Sonoma County landscape has changed since I arrived. I love the area as much now as I did when I arrived, yet things are definitely different, among them the increase in population, traffic, cost of living and tourists, and in my little town of Healdsburg, a trend toward upscale shops, restaurants and wine bars, replacing the mom-and-pops of the early 1990s.
      There are now more than 250 wineries in Sonoma County, and the number of producers has soared in other California regions as well, among them Napa Valley, Mendocino County, Monterey County, Santa Barbara County, Livermore and Lodi.

      So in the past few months, I’ve made a concerted effort to learn what it is I don’t know. Here are just a handful of my recent discoveries, wines that wine lovers should know about. It’s one thing to be new; it’s another to be new and provide high-quality, interesting wines. The producers below deliver those goods.

      Cobb Wines – Each of winemaker Ross Cobb’s six Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs are 13.5% alcohol or lower – an admirable achievement, as each wine has plenty of ripe fruit flavor and a suppleness that makes it enjoyable now, yet also deserves cellaring for up to 10 years. All his wines have pure fruit, elegance and refreshing acidity; my hands-down favorite is the 2006 Cobb Wines Coastlands Vineyard: Diane Cobb Pinot Noir -- pricey at $72 per bottle, yet pure and ethereal, with multi-layered texture and flavor, and a dead-ringer for Grand Cru Burgundy.”
