Cobb Pinot Noir Emmaline Ann Vineyard 2011

    • Tasting Notes

Winemaker's notes: A complex and fascinating wine with layers of cherry, Fuji apple, ginger, fresh cracked pepper, dashi and tobacco leaf. Fine, powdery tannins and sophisticated mineral-driven notes of graphite, wet stone and mossy forest floor, as well as hints of cinnamon and cedar round out the palate.

    • The Vineyard

With a southwest exposure at an elevation of 800 feet, the tiny Emmaline Ann Vineyard gets the most shade and fog of any of the vineyards we work with. As a result, our Emmaline Ann Vineyard Pinot Noir is often the most subtle and Burgundian of our wines, and has become a favorite among connoisseurs of the style. After sampling a four-vintage vertical of our Emmaline Ann Vineyard Pinot Noirs, Ed McCarthy wrote an article forWine Review Online entitled, “Cobb Wines: California’s Greatest Pinot Noirs?”

Another yield-affected wine from the 2011 vintage, I found this to be the most delicate in the tasting. It has an enthralling nose of potting soil, balsa wood and sage, with flavours of Rainier cherry, strawberry and watermelon rind on the palate, with a subtle dried-fruit quality on the finish. It seems the extended time in barrel has helped to enhance the subtleties concealed in this wine. 75 cases made. 28 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.
