Diane Cobb founded a small Pinot Noir nursery at our Coastlands Vineyard many years ago to learn which clones of Pinot Noir excel here on the far Sonoma Coast. Based on what she learned, in 1998, Cobb Wines planted the Pommard and Mt. Eden clones on the 1906 Block. It’s called this because the original sheep rancher who worked the land carved the date 1906 into an old oak tree overlooking the block at the time of the great San Francisco earthquake. While Cobb Wines has historically always blended the fruit from this steep, west-facing hillside block with grapes from the Old Firs block of Coastlands, in recent years the 1906 Block has really come into its own, with the Pommard showing intense plum and spice notes, and the Mt. Eden grapes offering lovely dark fruit and cassis elements.
